Esther Stewart: The Interaction of Space and Colour.
thE NEW ABSTRACT KID ON THE BLOCK
For our second artist series we bring you Esther Stewart; someone with a thought-provoking and exciting approach to abstract art. Her work carries a reminiscent air of American artist Ellsworth Kelly; a pioneer in the development of abstract art. Inspired by everyday life Stewart takes inspiration from architecture and domestic spaces, simplifying it down to its purest forms and colours. She creates tension between colour and shape creating divine pieces we can’t help but wonder over.
Since graduating in 2010 from the University of Melbourne; she has won multiple awards, held solo exhibitions, worked on interior spaces and had her work transformed from canvas to fabric for Valentino’s AW 16 Menswear collection. Today we look at her pieces, try to understand what makes them so successful and observe interior spaces which embody her style of work.
Stewart’s pieces use the careful orchestration of colour. She uses colour combinations which you would not deem as compatible, the use of clashing colours in her work creates depth and an element of surprise on the eye.
You can see her influence from architecture from the use of raw materials like marble or gold which contrast and complement her simple blocks of colour.
Stewart uses simple geometry; her success lies in the careful placement of these simple shapes, the relationship created between their spacing and how they connect with each other is imperative to her eye locking pieces. In other pieces she chooses shapes which necessarily wouldn’t balance in real life; creating an off balance composition.
In her busier and more detailed work, you can really start to see the influence architecture and domestic ornaments have had on her work. Her pieces thrive with patterns allusive of lattices, tiles, carpets and wood panelling. The strong combination of completely different patterns, colours and scales creates pieces bursting with life.
